4 Essentials for your at-home gym
Working out at-home is one of the easiest ways to stay in shape year round. You don’t have to leave your house to only get stuck in traffic, you can make your set-up as simple as a yoga mat on the floor, and you can use minimal equipment to so you can avoid clutter.
Training members of the Online Training Studio has been a blast not only because I get to work with motivated people every morning, but I get to watch them sign-in from a variety of locations! The convenience makes staying on track very easy for all of our members.
We don’t recommend you spend a ton on equipment right away so here are our 4 essential pieces us SerenaFit coaches use during our at-home workouts every week. We keep it simple and like to focus on form.
#1: Resistance bands – These effective tools are perfect for the at home gym. They pack powerful results and range in resitance levels, making it perfect for the person who wants variety in their strength training workouts.
#2: Weights that fit your level – Start with 3-5lbs weights, or 8-10lbs if you’re intermediate/advanced. It takes time to build strength and to fall into a weight training routine so you don’t need a full rack of weights to get going. Buy 1-2 sets and take it from there.
#3: Yoga block – This is great to have for yoga sessions. We’re all so tight, and often times can’t fall into some of the poses comfortably. Using a block will boost your posture and your confidence when you’re first starting out, so you are able to progress your practice as you become more flexible.
#4: Yoga mat – Of course! We need a little padding underneath us when we’re working out. It also gives your space a boundary, so if you’re in a tight spot, you can stay within your mat to be sure you’re safe.
The real challenge comes from the intervals you choose when you’re working out, not necessarily the equipment. Programming is everything which can get tricky, especially when you’re just starting out and aren’t sure where to begin.
I’d pick one piece of equipment (bodyweight counts too!) then set my timer to 45 seconds on and 15 seconds rest. Choose up to 5 moves, work hard for those 45 seconds, take the short rest then repeat. It is as simple or as intricate as you want.
